“You’re Still the One”: A STUDY OF LONG – TERM MARRIAGE

Over the past two years FIW senior faculty conducted extensive interviews with couples married for at least four decades. We hoped to learn things from the stories of these marriages to help guide our clients and especially young couples just beginning their journey together. This workshop will explore the longevity of partnerships using the FIW Multi-Contextual Framework to understand the factors that influence that longevity. When we look at long-term marriages through this lens, we are looking at the interplay of intergenerational themes, individual development, life cycle stressors, and evolving family roles over decades:
  • Navigating the transition from career/child rearing-centric years to a shared landscape of retirement and aging.
  • Analyzing how successful long-term couples have managed both expected and untimely life cycle events.
  • Noting how the nurturance and intimacy evolve from logistical support to deep emotional legacy.
