The 24/7 togetherness associated with the COVID-19 pandemic has been complicated, with many complex discussions and often painstaking decisions for couples to make. It is our clinical observation at the Family Institute of Westchester, that the pre-morbid functioning of a couple has typically been a predictor of how the couple would handle the many challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now as most adults become vaccinated and schools and businesses re-open, couples are facing different challenges. They must again re-calibrate and make decisions about their re-entry into the “new norm.” Often the risk tolerance of each spouse is different.
While navigating the pandemic, long-standing marital dissatisfaction may have become intolerable, or new differences may have emerged around issues such as careers and finances, substance use, mental health or housing, adding to the complexity of re-entry.
Viewing couples through the lens of the FIW Multi-Contextual Model, we will discuss our cases and yours in a conversation about the current environment and the vulnerability of family systems as they re-enter society.
