Acceptance Is Protection: Supporting Families Caring for Transgender Youth
When a child comes out as transgender, everyone in the family goes through a form of transition. Specifically, families who do not identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ communities have diverse and complex responses. Whether they are overwhelmed by fear or grief, feeling helpless or competent, families need to process a wide range of thoughts and feelings, often embedded in multigenerational and cultural legacies around gender and sexual diversity. Parents face the need to adjust fast to respond to their child’s needs, advocate for them in the social world, while dealing with their own experiences and possible difference of values on the matter.
This workshop will present a short overview of gender identity development in childhood as well best clinical practices to provide gender-affirming relational care to families of transgender and gender expansive youth. Through case vignettes, lecture and interactive discussion, participants will identify ways to engage families, work with rejecting parents, identify their own resonances as well as integrate their clinical practice in the larger needs for education, advocacy and collateral support many families need.
